    Rancho Leonero’s history

The Baja peninsula in Mexico used to be a rugged, remote area.  Cabo San Lucas started as a  fishing village, few tourists knew about this place.  It was only when wealthy sportsmen and travelers that would adventure to fly or drive down there that they’d fall in love with the place.  Also, they returned with wild stories of the huge game they caught there.  As such Gil Powell was one of these hearty souls who fell in love with the area.  He was a wildlife cinematographer and around 1950 he found and purchased a 300-acre piece of paradise.  This place is located beachfront on East Cape.  This famous cinematographer was normally working in Africa recording the wildlife there and it’s because of this that the locals gave him the “El Leonero” nickname, which roughly translates to “The lion man“.  This is the origin of the ranch’s name.

    See and do

Sit back and just relax.  If you’re there, then your main plan was to snooze the day away and take a break from the daily routine.  Have a drink at the bar or lay on the beach for hours on end – the vibe will be of relaxation.  Here’s a list of things you can try when you’re in Rancho Leonero.

    Snorkeling

Spend a morning or evening exploring the famous double reef at the resort.  You can also take one of the guided snorkeling tours to Coral Beach.  From there, there’s also the opportunity to visit the nearby sea lion colony.

    Relaxing

Enjoy the full-service Spa treatment at the Ranch.  Relax with a therapeutic or deep tissue massage after a rigorous swim at the beach or spending the day fishing and battling with the world-class marlin you can find in Cabo.

    Hiking

If you’re in the mood for a little adventure just take a ride to Santiago area and follow the trail to the waterfalls.  From there, you can grab a well-deserved lunch at the famous John Wayne’s famous old hangout, the Palomar Restaurant.  This is also a bar located about 30 minutes from the Ranch.

    Beautiful Sea of Cortez

Jacque Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez “The World’s Aquarium,” due to its great biodiversity.  It is the most biologically diverse body of water on Earth.  To explain, it supports over 900 varieties of fish.  And, it supports more than 2,000 species of marine invertebrates.  Finally, It’s home to many endemic species, which are creatures that only exist there, and nowhere else on Earth.

There, you’ll find many sea creatures, the largest of which are the migratory whales.  These whales include humpback whales, California gray wales, and even killer whales.  Also, you’ll find giant whale sharks peacefully feeding on plankton.  Swimming next to these gentle giants is an experience of a lifetime.
